BEC is prepared to address the social needs of Bulgaria’s communities across the country.
BEC believes that community needs can best be solved “from the bottom up” – through citizen executed programs, rather than “trickle down” – from government mandates.
Every community has citizens who have the passion, skills and mindset to make life better for themselves and their neighbors through mobilizing people to assist the elderly, improve opportunities for children, celebrate their history and beautify their neighborhoods .
BEC wants to support civic-minded organizations by offering resources that can help them expand their impact, learn from one another by creating role models, and offer financial assistance that can improve and secure their effectiveness within the community for years to come.
BEC can also support businesses to be created – through entrepreneurship education and mentorship – so that people will want to come to these communities (and/or stay their) because they can find a job, especially jobs that can deliver needed, positive, social impact.
BEC will visit these communities to listen to their civic leaders describe their needs and goals, not to tell them what to do. The success they achieve must be the result of their actions, not BEC’s.
BEC will be there to respond to their questions and offer its support when requested; but the citizens’ need-fulfillment organizations must provide the experience based judgement …and do the work!
In May 2024 BEC’s director Lilly Drumeva-O’Reilly visited three historic Bulgarian towns – Gabrovo, Dryanovo and Tryvna. She made contact with their mayors and municipal officials, as well as with NGOs and community leaders. Several projects were identified, such as supporting the renowned “Art School” in Tryavna, the oldest “Chitaliste Razvitie” in Dryanovo and the “Mother’s Care” foundation in Gabrovo.
BEC is monitoring the progress of these communities and will continue the Community Revitalization Program in 2025.
